ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Magistrate Beth Campbell (BA, LLB (Hons) LLM): Beth bas been an ACT Magistrate and Coroner for over 20 years. She and her seven colleagues hear and deliver decisions on a wide range of criminal matters and civil proceedings. The majority of the ACT Magistrates Court's work is in the criminal jurisdiction. All criminal prosecutions in the ACT commence in the Magistrates Court and around 97% of them are finalised in that court.
Ben Lamont: Ben is a Forensics Capability Development and Training Officer at the AFP.
Assoc. Prof. Alain Middleton: Alain has presented at numerous international and national meetings on the subjects of Disaster Victim Identification and related Forensic issues.He has participated in various roles, in a number of major DVI events-Concorde Air Disaster, Bali bombing, Thai Tsunami, Samoan Tsunami.
Since 1978 Alain has been involved in all disasters in NSW. The Newcastle earthquake, major rail ,vehicle and aircraft accidents. Victorian Bushfire response. 2014-MH17. Assist AFP with Odontology DVI matters from policy to evidence interpretation.
As a specialist reservist with the Australian Defence Forces participated in a number of recoveries in relation to WWII and Vietnam theatres. Alain works with the INTERPOL Standing Committee on DVI, is a Staff Specialist, Forensic Odontology Westmead Hospital and Deputy - Identification Unit NSW Health. Alain was awarded an AO in January 2017. Alain also runs a part time private dental practice in Kirribilli, NSW, Australia.
Russell Lain: Like Alain, Russell has been involved in the identification operations following all mass casualty incidents in Australia and our region of strategic interest over many years. As a Clinical Associate Lecturer in the faculties of Dentistry and Medicine, University of Sydney, he presents to undergraduates and CPD participants, as well as police and military groups.
Russell has authored and co-authored several journal articles and book chapters and is involved in research activity through the Oral Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging Department of the Sydney Dental Hospital, where he is a Senior Clinical Specialist in Forensic Odontology.
Russell is a Lieutenant-Commander in the Navy Reserve attached to the Unrecovered War Casualties-Army Unit. This unit is responsible for location, recovery and identification of missing Australian servicemen and women from all conflicts. This work has taken him to Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Belgium. Russell was awarded a medal in the Order of Australia in this year’s Australia Day Honours list.
